Mimikry

Design & Development

2016

In her 2016 BA project MIMIKRY, Georgiana-Andreea delved into the multifaceted phenomenon of mimicry, exploring complex themes such as camouflage, deception, adaptation, and the generation of impulses. Guided by her mentors Alexandra Schwarz and Matthias Kohlmann, the project examined how these elements influence perception and design, aiming to redefine the role of mimicry in fashion and accessories.

Georgiana-Andreea’s collection pushes the boundaries of conventional design by creating a dynamic interplay between light and shadow, surface and outline. The use of staggered materials to form positive and negative shapes embodies the essence of mimicry in both aesthetic and functional contexts. Her designs engage with the idea of transformation, where the viewer's perception shifts as light plays across surfaces, offering a unique visual experience that challenges traditional concepts of representation.

Drawing inspiration from the writings of French art historian Quatremère de Quincy, who argued that art should transcend mere reproduction of reality, the designer approached MIMIKRY as an artistic exploration. Rather than simply creating accessories that imitate the world, she sought to generate new visual and tactile experiences that invite deeper reflection on the concept of deception in art and design.

This project not only challenges traditional forms of representation but also presents a fresh perspective on the role of accessories in fashion, blurring the lines between art, functionality and design. Through MIMIKRY, Georgiana reimagines how accessories can engage with both their form and function in innovative and thought-provoking ways.
